Treatment for Venous Disease

Options For Vascular Treatment

The most common type of venous disease is chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). CVI occurs when the valves in the veins that carry blood from the legs to the heart are not working properly. This causes blood to pool in the legs and can lead to a number of symptoms, including:

  • Aching or throbbing pain in the legs
  • Swelling in the legs
  • Skin changes, such as discoloration or ulcers
  • Varicose veins

Fortunately, CVI is treatable. The first step in treatment is to address the condition's underlying causes, such as obesity, pregnancy, or prolonged standing. Once the underlying cause is addressed, there are a number of commonly referred treatments that can help improve blood flow and reduce symptoms. These include:

  • Compression stockings: These stockings apply gentle pressure to the legs and help to improve blood flow.
  • Elastic wraps: These wraps are similar to compression stockings but are applied to the legs with an elastic bandage.
  • Vein surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary
